Further west, Nafpaktos reflects a layered past spanning ancient, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods, while Messolonghi stands as a symbol of resistance during the Greek War of Independence. Today, it is also known for its lagoon and its famous avgotaracho (bottarga), a product that highlights the region’s connection to the sea.
