Exploring the Beauty of Corfu
The people of Corfu are known for their deep religious devotion, and their most important celebrations are dedicated to Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit, and the island’s patron saint, Saint Spyridon. The festivities begin on August 6 with the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, celebrated in Pontikonisi, Perivoli, Strinyla, Paliochori, Agioi Deka, and Agios Matthaios. On August 15, in Karousades, Peroulades, and Stavros in the Municipality of Achilleion, visitors flock to the festival, famous for offering the island’s best roasted meats. Traditional dancing to the sound of violins continues late into the night, while churches provide abundant bread for all. A particularly notable celebration in honour of the Virgin Mary is held at the Church of Platytera.
