Greece

Salamis is the largest island of the Saronic Gulf, lying between the Peloponnese and Attica, just a short distance from Athens. Despite its proximity to the capital, Salamis retains a distinct identity shaped by history, mythology, and a strong local character.

One of the most defining moments in its history is the Battle of Salamis, a turning point in the Greek-Persian Wars. In 480 BCE, Xerxes I launched a massive campaign against Greece after years of preparation, assembling a vast military and naval force. The decisive naval confrontation took place in the narrow straits between Attica and Salamis, with Xerxes observing from Mount Aigaleo.

Against overwhelming odds, the Greek fleet achieved a remarkable victory. Using the agility and tactical advantages of their triremes, they outmanoeuvred the larger Persian fleet, ramming and disabling enemy ships in the confined waters. This victory was not only strategic but also symbolic: it effectively ended Persian ambitions to expand further into Europe. Many historians consider it one of the most significant battles in the history of Western civilisation, as a different outcome might have altered the course of Greek—and therefore European—development.

Salamis

Beyond its historical importance, Salamis is an island that reveals itself gradually. It is not a destination of polished tourism, but rather one that rewards exploration and curiosity. Often described as the “little sister” of Athens and closely connected to Piraeus, it combines urban proximity with a more grounded, authentic atmosphere.

Salamis is also deeply rooted in Greek mythology and cultural history. It is associated with Ajax the Great, the legendary king of the island. The tragedian Euripides was born here, while Georgios Karaiskakis, a hero of the Greek Revolution, is buried on the island. In more recent history, the poet Angelos Sikelianos spent his final years here, adding to Salamis’s rich cultural legacy.

Today, Salamis offers a unique blend of history, mythology, and everyday Greek life. It is a place where visitors can step away from the expected and discover an island defined by depth, authenticity, and a powerful connection to the past.

Gastronomy

Salamis means beach, ouzo and fish. Here you will enjoy octopus, kalamari, soupies (cuttlefish) and prawns. The fish market in the town of Salamina is a great place for a trip, to shop for fish for home and to strike up conversations with the perpetually sociable fishmongers. Here you will find bakaliaro (cod), prosfigakia (whiting), menoula (Spicara maena), soupies (cuttlefish), thrapsala (small squid), octopus, and many other fish, which, according to the sellers, are caught in Aegina, Poros, and Hydra.

In Salamis’s pastry shops, you will find halva, loukoumades, skaltsounia, and krostini (a meze with a base of bread, grilled or toasted on the grill or in the oven, served with different cheeses, vegetables, meat, and dips).

Other local dishes

Barbounia-savore: medium-sized mullet, floured and fried in sauce with rosemary, garlic and a little vinegar.
Skatiles pilafi: this is the name for the beach clams of Salamis. After being washed to remove the mud, they are steamed and cooked as pilaf with onion, tomato paste, and dill.
Kougoulouari: Α sweet marrow pie.
Platetsi: oiled bread, with or without feta cheese.

Stuffed pancakes: these are filo dough stuffed with grated almonds and walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves, rolled into a circle, then fried and served with warm honey, cinnamon, cloves, and grated walnuts.
