Naxos is getting ready to host the 16th Potato Festival on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Kapares, Agia Anna. The event is organised by the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos (E.A.S.), under the auspices of the Hellenic Association of Agricultural Cooperatives (ETH.E.A.S.).
Programme and activities
This year’s festival will place a strong emphasis on gastronomy. Chefs will showcase creative dishes using the renowned Naxian potato, offering visitors the opportunity to sample new flavours. The celebration will continue into the night with live music and dancing.
In parallel, a conference on the challenges of the primary sector will take place, focusing on the difficulties farmers face and exploring potential solutions.
The role of the Naxos potato
The Naxos potato, recognised as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product, holds a central place in the island’s economy and cultural identity. Annual production reaches approximately 8,000 tons, with more than 200 families dedicated to cultivating it.
Over the years, the Potato Festival has become a vital institution on the island, promoting local agriculture while also serving as a community celebration that combines knowledge, food, and culture.
The September 13th festival is expected to draw residents and visitors alike, highlighting the enduring importance of the potato in Naxian life and production.
