Location and Elevation

The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 2,050 meters (6,725 feet) on Mount Tymfi’s slopes, near the Gamila peak. It is located within the Vikos–Aoos National Park, a protected area known for its dramatic landscapes, deep gorges, and rich wildlife.

The closest villages are Papingo and Mikro Papingo, picturesque settlements that serve as starting points for the trek to the lake.


Formation and Characteristics

Drakolimni of Tymfi is a glacial lake formed during the last Ice Age. The lake is relatively small, with a surface area of around 5 hectares, and is surrounded by alpine meadows and rugged cliffs. Its clear, cold waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a mesmerizing mirror effect on calm days.


Flora and Fauna

The lake and its surrounding environment are home to several rare and endemic species:

  • Alpine Newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris): A small amphibian often referred to as the “dragon” of the lake, linking the lake to ancient dragon myths.
  • Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos): Frequently spotted soaring above the area.
  • Wildflowers: In spring and summer, the alpine meadows bloom with colourful wildflowers, such as orchids and crocuses.
  • Pindus Horseshoe Viper (Vipera graeca): A rare species endemic to the Pindus range.

Myth and Legend

Drakolimni means “Dragon Lake,” and local folklore tells of a mythical dragon that once inhabited the lake. According to legend, this dragon waged a fierce battle with another dragon from the nearby Drakolimni of Smolikas, hurling rocks and fire across the sky. The rocks found in the area are said to be remnants of these legendary battles.


Hiking to Drakolimni of Tymfi

The hike to Drakolimni is one of the most popular treks in Greece and typically takes 5-6 hours one way.

  • Starting Point: The trail begins in the village of Mikro Papingo (960 meters elevation).
  • Route: The path leads through lush forests, alpine meadows, and rocky terrain, passing the Astraka Mountain Hut (1,950 meters), a popular resting spot for hikers. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach the lake from the hut.
  • Difficulty: The trail is moderately challenging, with some steep and rocky sections, requiring good physical fitness and proper hiking gear.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Drakolimni of Tymfi is during late spring, summer, and early autumn (May to October), when the weather is more stable and the trails are snow-free. In winter, the area is covered in snow and ice, making access difficult and dangerous.
