Montofoli Wine Estate is a remarkable landmark in South Evia. Venetians, Franks, Ottomans, and other civilizations have vested this land with extraordinary energy, and the estate commands a panoramic view of the sea and bountiful fields central to Karystos’ long history.
An antique staircase built from the remains of ancient buildings runs the estate; its 157 steps are said to have served as a road to an important spot whose location remains unknown. The buildings span multiple eras: the Venetian House with three arched windows was built in the 1300s, while its left section was added during the Ottoman era. The Dovecote stands on the ruins of a Roman Bath and the Red House is a neoclassical building from the late 19th century. The Wine Cellar — a restored Ottoman stable where wine ages today — is built beside the ruins of the Christian church of St Marcus.
Among its wines, Montofoli Wine Estate produces an exceptional dessert sweet wine, as well as handmade citrus marmalades and chocolate. The estate also offers unique hospitality in its historical buildings.
