Montofoli Wine Estate is a remarkable landmark in South Evia. Venetians, Franks, Ottomans, and other civilizations have vested this land with extraordinary energy, and the estate’s panoramic view of the sea and bountiful fields has been a point of reference throughout Karystos’ long history.
An antique staircase runs the estate, built from the remains of ancient buildings; its 157 steps are said to have served as a ‘road’ leading to an important spot whose location remains unknown. The buildings on the estate span different eras: the Venetian House with three arched windows was built in the 1300s, while its left section was added during the Ottoman era. The Dovecote stands on the ruins of a Roman Bath and the Red House is a neoclassical building from the late 19th century. The Wine Cellar, a restored Ottoman stable where the wine ages today, stands beside the ruins of the Christian church of St Marcus.
Among its various wines, Montofoli Wine Estate produces an exceptional dessert sweet wine, as well as handmade citrus marmalades and chocolate. The Montofoli Villas offer guests the unique experience of dwelling in a historic vineyard.
