If you are in Kefalonia in August, there is one experience you should not miss: the Feast of Panagia Lagouvarda in Markopoulo. This celebration combines local tradition, deep religious devotion, authentic island festivity, and rich gastronomy, framed by a unique phenomenon found nowhere else in the world.
The phenomenon of the “snakes of the Virgin Mary”

From August 6th to 15th, small harmless snakes appear around the churchyard, the bell tower, and even on the icon of the Virgin Mary. Locals and visitors alike consider them blessed, welcoming them with reverence. This mysterious occurrence gives the feast a miraculous aura, attracting crowds from across Greece and abroad.

The Feast of Panagia Lagouvarda is also a celebration of flavours. Around the church, stalls are set up showcasing the island’s culinary identity:
- Robola wine: Kefalonia’s famous white wine, perfectly paired with festive meals.
- Traditional meze: Grilled meats, sausages, cheeses, and olives shared generously among visitors.
- Sweets: Mandoles (caramelised almonds), sesame pasteli with honey, baklava, and homemade pies.
