Description
The story of Sclavos Winery is one of heritage, passion, and a deep connection to the land of Kefalonia.
The Sclavos family, originally from the village of Domata in the Livathos region, has a rich maritime history dating back centuries. During the 18th century, members of the family settled in Odessa, where they became successful grain merchants, operating their own fleet of trading ships. It was there that the family’s love for winemaking first flourished, as great-grandfather Evryviadis Sclavos managed a renowned family-owned winery.
Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Evryviadis returned to Kefalonia and, in 1919, established the family’s first vineyards on their estate in Kechrion, Palliki, nestled on the slopes of Laskaratos Hill. Guided by respect for nature and traditional farming methods, he laid the foundations for what would become one of the island’s most distinctive wineries.
In 1990, the historic family vineyard entered a new chapter with its revival and a renewed commitment to producing exceptional wines. Today, the estate’s own-rooted vines are cultivated according to biodynamic farming principles and have been certified organic for over fifteen years. Low yields, mature vines, the traditional goblet training system, and gentle winemaking techniques ensure that every bottle authentically expresses the unique character of Kefalonia’s terroir.
A significant milestone came in 2014, when the Sclavos and Zisimatos families joined forces to establish Sclavos–Zisimatos Ltd., Winery & Vineyards. This partnership expanded the estate with additional vineyards in Lacomatia, within the prestigious Robola PDO zone, and Kontogourata, further enriching the winery’s diverse range of indigenous varieties.
Today, Sclavos Winery continues to craft wines that reflect the island’s rich history, unique landscape, and unwavering commitment to sustainable viticulture. Every bottle tells the story of generations dedicated to preserving Kefalonia’s winemaking traditions while embracing a vision of quality, authenticity, and respect for nature.
We invite you to discover our wines, explore our vineyards, and experience the true essence of Kefalonia—one glass at a time.
