Tzatziki is an appetizer of the Greek cuisine. It is Turkish in origin and its name derives from the Turkish word cacık, which is why it was once called satziki in Greece. Its main ingredient is strained yogurt, to which grated cucumber, minced garlic, dill and some olive oil are added.
It should be refrigerated for at least one hour, not only to cool it for serving, but also to meld the aromas and flavors of the individual ingredients. Tzatziki can be served as an appetizer, typically to accompany grilled meats. It goes well with French fries or fried zucchini and can also be spread on bread and used as a meze that accompany ouzo or tsipouro. Tzatziki is also commonly added to souvlaki wrapped in pita bread.
