Description
Founded in 1919 and located in Markopoulo Attica, just 30 kilometers from the Athens city centre, the Papagiannakos winery is the first bioclimatic winery in Greece and was specially designed to mark a new era.
The family-owned vineyards are planted mainly with the Savatiano variety, but other Greek indigenous varieties such as Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, and Agiorgitiko are being cultivated since the family’s third generation assumed ownership.
The landscape and terroir of the Attican vineyards, the climate (mild winters and hot dry summers assisted by the sea breeze) and the limestone soils create the ideal terroir for making dry white wines that have an intense mineral aroma and offer a perfectly balanced palate.
The combination of knowledge and tradition, stretching back for nearly a century, has resulted in the creation of a complete selection of wines.
Domaine Papagiannakos wines have earned a multitude of awards and hold a distinguished place on the lists of the finest wines exported from Greece.
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
On arrival, meet one of the winery guides and then head out into the vineyards to begin your tour. As you stroll amid the vines, learn how the area has a rich viticulture heritage, with the winery itself dating back more than a century. See the plump Savatiano, Assyrtiko and Malagouzia grapes, which are used to make some of region’s most traditional wine varieties. Then, discover how the area’s climate and location create ideal conditions for dry white wines with high alcohol, balanced acidity and a fresh, delicate floral nose.
Next, see where the wine is fermented and learn how the bioclimatic winery is designed to consume less energy than a conventional building. You’ll also see the wooden casks used to hold resting wine.
After your tour, head to a tasting room where you’ll sample the estate wines, paired with delicious regional specialties such as local cheeses, fig spreads, pistachios. Savor the delicate bouquet of flavors in each wine, and pick up tips on how to identify the varying aromas and ingredients.
