Description

Founded in 1919 and located in Markopoulo Attica, just 30 kilometres from the Athens city centre, the Papagiannakos winery is the first bioclimatic winery in Greece and was specially designed to mark a new era.
The family-owned vineyards are planted mainly with the Savatiano variety. Still, other Greek indigenous varieties such as Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, and Agiorgitiko have been cultivated since the family’s third generation assumed ownership.
The landscape and terroir of the Attican vineyards, the climate (mild winters and hot dry summers assisted by the sea breeze) and the limestone soils create the ideal terroir for making dry white wines that have an intense mineral aroma and offer a perfectly balanced palate.
The combination of knowledge and tradition, stretching back for nearly a century, has resulted in the creation of a complete selection of wines.
Domaine Papagiannakos wines have earned a multitude of awards and hold a distinguished place on the list of the finest wines exported from Greece.

TOUR AND TASTING

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by one of our knowledgeable winery guides, who will accompany you as you embark on your vineyard tour. As you stroll through the lush vineyards, immerse yourself in the rich viticulture heritage of the region. The winery boasts a history spanning over a century, showcasing a commitment to the timeless art of winemaking.

Visitors can see the Savatiano, Assyrtiko, and Malagouzia vines, integral to the production of the region’s most traditional wine varieties. Delve into the unique attributes of these grapes and appreciate how the climate and strategic location contribute to the creation of dry white wines characterized by high alcohol content, balanced acidity, and a fresh, delicate floral nose.

Continue your exploration by visiting the fermentation premises, where you will gain insights into the bioclimatic design of the winery, emphasizing sustainability and energy efficiency. Marvel at the wooden casks employed for ageing and resting the wine, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle.

Concluding the tour, make your way to a tastefully designed tasting room, where a delightful experience awaits. Indulge in a selection of estate wines expertly paired with regional delicacies such as local cheeses, fig spreads, and pistachios. Allow your palate to savour the intricate bouquet of flavours present in each wine, and receive guidance on identifying the diverse aromas and ingredients that contribute to the unique character of each vintage.
