Description
Roxane Matsa Estate in Attica lies in the heart of Kantza—an area long celebrated for producing wines of exceptional character. Established in 1878, this historic vineyard is rooted in tradition, with many of its vines now over 30 years old. Spanning 122,000 sq.m and cultivated entirely according to organic farming principles, the estate thrives on clay-loam soils rich in calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
The defining element of the estate’s unique terroir is the famed Attica climate: warm, dry, and sunlit, with mild winters and hot summers—conditions ideal for viticulture. Although Kantza is widely regarded as the cradle of the Savatiano variety, Matsa Estate has, in recent years, embraced innovation with experimental plantings of select Greek and international varieties.
Today, the vineyard cultivates Savatiano, Roditis, Assyrtiko, Syrah, Malagouzia, and Sauvignon Blanc, each expressing the distinctive identity of the land.
Winery Tour and Wine Tasting
- Historic 1878 Vineyard Tour: Walk the Roxane Matsa Estate vineyards in Kantza and learn about over 145 years of continuous viticulture — one of the most enduring and historically significant wine estates in the greater Athens area
- Kantza Terroir: Understand why Kantza has been celebrated for wine quality for generations and how the Matsa family has preserved and expressed this terroir’s distinctive character across fifteen decades
- Wine Tasting: Taste Roxane Matsa Estate’s wines and experience the exceptional character that 145+ years of accumulated vineyard knowledge creates in the hills of eastern Attica
One of the estate’s most iconic symbols is the Venetian lion found on the labels of Roxane Matsa wines—known as the “protector of the vines.” The original lion statue was discovered on the grounds and later gifted, along with the surrounding land, to the Greek state by the Matsa family. It now stands just a few meters from the northern vineyard, watching over the estate much as it has for centuries.
The estate’s logo carries its own artistic legacy. Created by the renowned Greek artist Yiannis Tsarouchis, the sketch was drawn in 1945 and lovingly dedicated to Roxane Matsa in 1984. At the bottom, one can still read the handwritten inscription “στη Ρωξάνη με αγάπη” (“to Roxane with love”), alongside the artist’s signature and date—a quiet tribute to a remarkable woman and a timeless vineyard.
