Every year, the Cultural Association “Simonides” organizes the Pasteli Festival, which is unique to Amorgos, and on the first Sunday after August 15th the air is filled with the fragrance of pasteli! A cooking pot is set up in Loza Square in Chora, the main town, and the process of making pasteli begins. All stages of its preparation are demonstrated in detail and the audience learns all the secrets. The Amorgian pasteli is made before everyone’s eyes and then distributed on a leaf of lemon, as required by Amorgian tradition. Along with psimeni raki and musical performances, the island festival continues into the wee hours of the morning.
