May 21st | 📍 Astyraki, Malevizi – Heraklion – Crete

Every year on May 21st, the village of Astyraki in Malevizi, Heraklion, comes alive with the great feast dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen. It is one of the most popular festivals in Crete, attracting visitors from across the island.

The village of Astyraki, in the province of Malevizi, takes its name from the ancient astyrakas tree. These centuries-old species still stand today in the courtyard of the church of Saints Constantine and Helen. Also known as the wild quince, the astyrakas (Styrax officinalis) thrives primarily in the mountainous regions of Crete.

This particular tree is considered sacred. Tradition tells that the villagers once placed icons in the ruins of an old church elsewhere in the village to honour their saints. Yet, the icon of Saints Constantine and Helen repeatedly and miraculously returned to the roots of the ancient tree. This divine sign led the villagers to build the church on that very site.

According to legend, the tree first appeared in Crete before spreading to other parts of Greece. The ancient Cretans used the astyrakas to produce a kind of incense, dedicated to the worship of Apollo. Historical references even mention the names “Styraxite Apollo” and “Mount Styraxion.” Beyond its spiritual significance, the tree was valued for its hardwood, and even today, its properties are utilised in traditional healing practices.

Religious significance

The day begins with the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen. This is followed by the procession of the icon through the village streets, with residents and visitors participating in an atmosphere of devotion and celebration.

The feast meal

The meal is a central part of the festival and reflects the tradition and hospitality of the locals. After the procession, villagers open their homes or organise communal tables in the square, offering food to every visitor.

Meal highlights:

  • Homemade and traditional: Dishes prepared with recipes passed down through generations.
  • Local ingredients: Olive oil, local vegetables, cheeses (graviera, anthotyro), fresh eggs, meat or fish.
  • Meze and sides: Tomato fritters, herb fritters, pasta with greens, cheese pies, dakos, and more.
  • Social aspect: Visitors sit with locals, share stories, and participate in the communal celebration.

The grand celebration

In the evening, the festival culminates with the grand traditional feast organised by the village Cultural Association. Tables are set with abundant food and drinks, while the sounds of the Cretan lyra and laouto accompany dancing that lasts until dawn.
