Ancient Vergina: The First Capital of the Macedonian Kingdom

Ancient Vergina, known in antiquity as Aigai, was the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedon and one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Located in northern Greece, Aigai served as the political, cultural, and religious centre of the Macedonian dynasty for centuries. It is closely associated with King Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great, whose achievements changed the course of world history.

The origins of Vergina/Aigai date back to the Early Iron Age. The city became the seat of the Temenid dynasty, the royal family that ruled Macedon for generations. Although the administrative capital later moved to Pella, Aigai remained the sacred royal centre where Macedonian kings were crowned, celebrated important ceremonies, and were buried.

One of the most remarkable features of ancient Vergina is its royal necropolis. Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of burial mounds, including richly furnished royal tombs. In 1977, Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos uncovered a series of spectacular tombs, including one widely believed to belong to King Philip II. The discoveries included golden artefacts, weapons, armour, jewellery, and exquisite wall paintings, revealing the wealth and artistic sophistication of ancient Macedonian society.

The city also contained a magnificent palace, one of the largest and most impressive buildings of Classical Greece. Built during the reign of Philip II, the palace served as a centre of government and royal ceremonies. Nearby stood the theatre where Philip II was assassinated in 336 BC, an event that led to Alexander the Great’s accession to the Macedonian throne.

Ancient Aigai/Vergina provides valuable insights into the culture, politics, and daily life of the ancient Macedonians. Its monuments demonstrate the power of a kingdom that would soon dominate the Greek world and, under Alexander the Great, go on to create one of the largest empires in history.

Today, Vergina is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts visitors from around the world. Its museums and archaeological remains preserve a unique chapter of ancient history, allowing modern audiences to explore the origins of Macedonian civilisation and its lasting influence on the ancient world. Four burial chambers were discovered there, two of them not despoiled by tomb robbers. One of them belonged to Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, and one of his wives, while the other belonged to the young son of Alexander the Great and Roxanne, Alexander the fourth of Macedonia.

All the finds discovered in the burial chambers are on display at the museum built to encase the burial structures. Vergina is among the most beautiful and impressive ancient sites in Greece, and the findings brought to light, as well as the exceptional frescoes on the tombs, show how elevated Macedonian life was and how attractive their aesthetics were.
