The Evros River is a natural border between Greece and Turkey. Its estuary in the Thracian Gulf forms the Evros Delta, one of Europe’s most important natural habitats.
Extending 20,000 hectares, it is on the list of protected regions under the 1971 International Treaty of Ramsar because of its important and rare floral species (more than 300 plant species), as well as fauna (40 mammal species, 28 reptilian species and 46 fish species), and in particular the 320 species of birds it hosts. One section of the delta has been designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) and is under consideration as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) in the Natura 2000 Network.
