Description
The Melas-Epidavros Olive Oil Domain was founded in 1994 by Evangelos Melas, son of a third-generation olive oil producer, an organic farmer with deep knowledge and extensive experience in the world of olive oil production.
The initial facilities were located in the town of Lygourio, near Epidavros, in the prefecture of Argolida in the Peloponnese. The company’s aim since the beginning of its commercial operations was the international market, with a steady philosophy based on the quality and the high organoleptic characteristics of its products.
Among the company’s first products commercialized was the extra virgin olive oil of the “Manaki” variety, a Protected Designation of Origin PDO “Ligourio Asklepios” of the Argolid prefecture since 1996, known in many countries for its unique quality characteristics and flavor. In 2008, the continuously-growing demand for the company’s products led to the establishment of new, modern facilities at the current location, including an olive press exclusively for producing organic olive oil as well as a second line for olive pressing of conventional olive oil, with vertical production and total control over the quality of production, storage, and bottling.
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Embark on an enriching journey starting amidst the serene Olive Trees Bio Garden, where nature’s beauty sets the stage for an immersive experience. Here, visitors are greeted with a captivating 6-minute video presentation, providing a glimpse into the rich heritage and meticulous craftsmanship that awaits.
Under the expert guidance of our teacher-guide, visitors have the unique opportunity to partake in the age-old tradition of olive harvesting. Equipped with nets placed beneath the trees, visitors engage in the art of harvesting, plucking ripe olives directly from the branches. The harvested fruits are then carefully gathered into boxes, ready for transport to the nearby mill for immediate processing into exquisite olive oil, following time-honored techniques.
Venturing into the modern crushing factory, visitors are immersed in the heart of the olive oil production process. Here, two distinct lines showcase the meticulous stages involved in crafting both organic olive oil and the prestigious extra virgin olive oil P.D.O. Ligourio Asklepieion, esteemed for its “Manaki” variety. Through detailed explanations provided by our knowledgeable guides, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the dedication and skill behind each bottle of oil.
The journey continues into the laboratory, where visitors witness firsthand the rigorous quality control measures that ensure the excellence of our products. From product testing to meticulous classification and storage in stainless steel tanks, every step is executed with precision to maintain the highest standards of quality.
After an enlightening exploration, visitors are treated to a sensory delight—a light snack featuring an array of local delicacies enhanced with the flavors of locally sourced extra virgin olive oil. From slices of oil-infused bread adorned with ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese sprinkled with fragrant oregano to savory cheese or spinach pies, accompanied by refreshing orange juice, each bite celebrates the authentic taste of the region.
Before bidding farewell, visitors are invited to peruse our retail shop, offering a selection of extra virgin olive oils and organic cosmetics crafted from the finest ingredients, including the renowned extra virgin organic olive oil “MELAS.”
The tour culminates in a moment of reflection, as visitors engage in discussions, sharing their thoughts, impressions, and newfound insights. As a token of our appreciation, each visitor receives a thoughtful parting gift, a 100g bar of olive oil-infused soap and a 500ml bottle of EVOO from our Organic Farming MELAS, ensuring they carry a piece of our heritage with them on their journey ahead.
