The Alexakis Winery is a family-run business located outside Heraklion in Crete. The company’s executives are Stelios Alexakis, oenologist and chemical engineer, and founder of the company in the 1970s, his wife Sofia and their children, Lazaros and Apostolos, holders of degrees in oenology from the University of Florence and from Fresno, California respectively. With their innovative ideas and know-how, they manage production, design and implement plans for the winery’s future development, with full respect to the heritage entrusted to them by the first generation.
It is the largest private winery in Crete, with a storage capacity of 16 million liters. In recent years, Alexakis Winery started exporting to the United States under the brand name Alexakis and to Russia and China under a private label.
For decades, the Alexakis Winery has been collaborating with almost all of the island’s grape growers, while learning the particular varieties, soils and micro-climates of Cretan vineyards. Based on this knowledge, they have been able to choose the vineyards having the ideal soil for each grape variety used, to produce the best wine. Guided by the quality of the grapes, our work starts in the field.
