Kos, Kardamaina, September 8,

The Festival of the Cup (Panigiri tis Koupas) in Kardamena, located on the island of Kos, is one of the oldest and most cherished traditions in the Dodecanese. Held annually on September 8, the feast day of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, it draws both locals and visitors to the village’s central church for a night of communal celebration, faith, and dance.

🥣 Highlights of the Festival

  • Traditional Meal: After the liturgy, attendees gather in the church courtyard to enjoy a communal meal featuring pitaridia (long pasta) served with kokkinisto (a rich tomato-based sauce), often accompanied by goat meat.
  • The Dance of the Cup: The centrepiece of the evening is the “Dance of the Cup.” The priest leads the dance, holding a cup in a wicker basket, followed by village council members. Couples then join in, with the wife taking the cup and leading the dance, while her husband follows. This continues as more couples join, passing the cup along the line. The dance symbolises unity and community spirit.
  • Live Music and Folk Dancing: The festivities are accompanied by live traditional Greek music, and local dance groups perform folk dances, creating an atmosphere of joy and cultural pride.
