The village of Assi Gonia is a historic village in the municipality of Apokoronas in the prefecture of Chania, Crete. The settlement is built at the foot of Lefka Ori (White Mountains) at an altitude of 380 meters at a very difficult-to-access location, east of Mount Agathes and at a distance of 57 kilometers from Chania and 35 km from Rethymno.
On the name day of St. George on April 23, or after Easter day, the villagers and shepherds of the region, along with their animals, gather to be blessed at the church of “St George, the Milkman”. The shepherds then milk their animals and distribute the milk to the pilgrims.
