Glass plate with Greek ‘retzeli’
Retzeli or Retseli

One of the traditional spoon sweets made in Thessaly, retzeli originates from Asia Minor. It is made from seasonal fruits or vegetables which are initially boiled on their own, but are then boiled together in grape must, which imparts sweetness, giving it the flavor of marmalade and spoon sweet. It can also be made from figs or quince, as suits one’s taste, following roughly the same method. Retzeli is served as spoon sweet or as a beverage by diluting it with cold water. It is also served with anevates tiganites.
