” Afros & Nectar” is a tasting event dedicated exclusively to two categories of Greek and international wines: sparkling and sweet. These are the pre-dinner and dessert wines, traditionally enjoyed before or after a good meal.

The event is being organized for the fourth year, taking place on November 24, from 12:00 to 20:30 (divided into two time slots, 12:00-16:00 and 16:30-20:30, to reduce crowding and allow for a more comfortable tasting experience) at the Lighthouse of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, with panoramic views of the sea and all of Athens.

“Froth & Nectar” offers a unique gathering for wine lovers to experience the enchanting bubbles of sparkling wines and the velvety warmth of sweet wines. Among sparkling wines, champagne — the renowned French sparkling wine exclusively from the Champagne region — remains the undisputed queen of bubbles. However, Greek sparkling wines have been flourishing for years. In the realm of sweet wines, Greece holds its own on a global scale, dominating the “dessert wines” category, which also includes fortified wines that are not necessarily sweet.

The purpose of “Froth & Nectar” is twofold:

  1. To allow the tasting of champagnes and other sparkling wines, as well as dessert wines (both sweet and fortified) just before the holiday season, when their consumption peaks (Christmas season), so that participants can choose labels to enjoy throughout the festivities.
  2. To encourage wine enthusiasts to enjoy sparkling and dessert wines year-round, with or without food, before or after meals, making them accessible for any occasion and not limited to special events or pairings.

Apart from showcasing wines from Greek winemakers and wine importers in Greece, this year’s “Froth & Nectar” honours Asti in Northern Italy (Piedmont), featuring its famous and highly popular Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante wines, which Italian producers will bring to the exhibition as they are not available in Greece. Additionally, in a special room, 60 foreign sparkling and sweet wines (30 in the first session and 30 in the second) will be showcased, having recently distinguished themselves in the international Concours Mondial de Bruxelles competition. These wines are not available in the Greek market, and many are rare. The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, one of the largest and most prestigious competitions worldwide, is represented in Greece by Vinetum, the event’s organizer.
