Description
The story of the Karamitros family is inseparably linked to Mesenikolas, a legacy rooted in time and tradition in the heart of Thessaly. During the Ottoman era, the family left Evrytania for the fertile lands of Mesenikolas, where their passion for viticulture laid the foundation for a rich winemaking heritage.
In 1959, Lake Plastiras was created just steps away from the Mesenikolas vineyards, enhancing the extraordinary terroir and creating a favourable microclimate. With vineyards at 700 meters altitude on the slopes of the Agrafa mountains and rich clay-loam soil, the conditions are ideal for premium winemaking.
This region is home to Greece’s smallest PDO zone, which includes Mesenikolas, Morfovouni and Moschato. The 110 hectares of privately owned vineyards and 250 hectares of partner vineyards are dry-farmed and hand-harvested.
Greek varieties include Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Moschato, Limniona, Roditis, and the rare Mavro Mesenikola — a red grape found nowhere else in the world. International varieties include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.
Mavro Mesenikola grows tall with minimal lateral branches, producing wines with soft, velvety tannins and a complex, fruit-forward character. Harvested from late September to early October, it offers wines of remarkable depth and richness.
