Tinos is famous for its countless chapels and festivals that blend religious devotion with the joy of community celebration. Among them, the Festival of Saint John in Mountados stands out, attracting locals, pilgrims, and visitors every year.

A Village Straight Out of a Fairytale

Mountados, built amphitheatrically with views of the Aegean Sea, is one of the most picturesque villages of Tinos. Narrow alleys, stone-built houses, and postcard-like landscapes form the perfect setting for the celebration. At its heart lies the church of Saint John the Baptist, the focal point of the festival.

The day begins with Orthros (Matins) and a Divine Liturgy in the church, followed by a procession of the saint’s icon through the village streets.

The Festival and Hospitality

After the service, Mountados’ main square comes alive. Tables are set with traditional delicacies, local wine, and raki, generously shared by the villagers. In the afternoon and evening, the celebration peaks with traditional music and dances: violins, lutes, syrtos, and ballos create an irresistible rhythm.

Often, the local cultural association organises a raffle or other activities, adding even more vibrancy to the festivities.

The Meaning of the Festival

More than just a celebration, the Festival of Saint John in Mountados is:

  • A union of faith and tradition,
  • A gathering of community and visitors, where everyone becomes one big family,
  • A living testimony of Tinian cultural identity, preserved proudly through generations.

An Authentic Tinian Experience

The festival in Mountados is not just an event; it is an experience. Those who attend will feel the solemnity of the service, savour local flavours, dance to the rhythms of the Aegean, and truly sense the heartbeat of Tinos through its traditions.
