It is one of the most distinct religious and traditional celebrations in Syros, which takes place every year during the first ten days of August in one of the island’s most beautiful and picturesque chapels.
In one of Syros’ oldest churches, Saint Kyriakos, located in the small settlement of Danako, the village where the musician and rebetiko artist Markos Vamvakaris was born and lived during his early years, a traditional festival is held annually.
According to the custom, after the divine liturgy on August 8th, in the chapel officially recorded in 1623 but dating back to 1300, a feast is organized where locals start with treats such as mastiha, Syros’ traditional Turkish delight, and watermelon, as part of the local tradition. Later in the evening, a traditional celebration takes place with island songs, dance, food, and drink.
