Poungia, meaning “purses”, are one of the most famous sweets of the Dodecanese islands of Greece in the south-eastern Aegean. Sweet poungia are a traditional sweet for weddings and celebrations with a sweet filling in crispy, thin pastry-sheet. Poungia are fried with walnuts and honey.
According to the tsatoni (a custom on the island of Patmos), the bride fills a tray with at least 300 poungia and takes them to the groom to ask for his hand!
