Most people could expect the “souvlaki” (anything grilled on a skewer; most common is lamb, pork, and chicken, typically marinated in oil, salt, pepper, oregano, and lemon) or the “pita gyros” (roasted and sliced meat on a turning spit, typically served with sauces) as a favorite Greek food of foreign visitors, but facts are abusive, since the traditional “kleftiko” (Cypriot dish: lamb slow-baked on the bone, first marinated in garlic and lemon juice, originally cooked in a pit oven. It is often baked with potatoes) and the “stifado” (rabbit stew with pearl onions, red wine and cinnamon) are the ones they eat all the more. They also like the Greek salad with cucumber, tomato, onion, feta cheese, and other products, while when drinking they prefer to taste ouzo, which is a very tasty but strong drink. Of course, they do not refuse the Greek beers which they like a lot since as they say, they are lighter and tastier than in their own country.

They ask for recipes
Of course, there are tourists who love Greek food and take care to take back to their countries the recipes so that they can make them at home. They even point out that our country’s food is a good reason to return for their holidays and taste our delicious dishes.

Hosting and mood
For foreign visitors the hospitality and the food on our island ( Zakynthos) are things that have an important role for them to come back and enjoy the beauties of Greece. As they themselves say, they enjoy their stay in Zante and they like our traditional delicacies as well as the contact with the personnel of the shops which is very friendly and pleasant. Let us note that in addition to the traditional dishes there are local delicacies such as our cheeses from Zakynthos that sell like hot cakes for visitors, as well as the “mantolato” (nougat) and “pasteli” (sesame seed candy).
