ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Visit the Enchanting Artificial Lake of Agia:

Discover the captivating artificial lake of Agia, located just 9 km west of Chania near the village of Agia. Covering 100 acres, this small lake is nestled close to the Fasas valley, renowned as the most humid region in Crete. Fed by underground springs originating from Lefka Ori and the river Xekolomenos, the lake was transformed from a swamp into an artificial reservoir for hydroelectric power by the Power Public Corp. While the power station is now abandoned, visitors can still explore the remnants of old mechanisms and a corresponding museum.

This charming lake is a haven for Crete’s most diverse array of aquatic plants and hosts crucial fauna species, including rare ferns and frogs. Additionally, it serves as a sanctuary for both migratory and non-migratory birds, earning international protection. The ecological significance of Ayia is underscored by its safeguarding under international laws.

Explore Meskla’s Riverside Charm:

Meskla, located 21 km southwest of Chania, offers a delightful experience. Take a brief riverside stroll accompanied by the soothing sounds of gurgling waters and towering plane trees, leading to the picturesque village nestled at the foothills of the White Mountains. Meskla boasts a rich history and tradition, surrounded by towering mountains and anchored at its southern end by the sources of the river Keriti or Iardanos, flowing through the entire “Kampos” and into Platanias.

Hidden amid rocks and beneath majestic plane trees, the springs in Meskla are a point of incredible natural beauty. Visitors can savour a meal or coffee in the shade provided by ancient trees. Adjacent to the springs, explore the church of Panagia, and a bit further, discover the even older Church of Christ. Every August 14th, the village square comes alive with a vibrant festival featuring traditional dances, music, and local delicacies, including the renowned meat pie—an experience truly etched in memory.

Discover the Intriguing Offerings of Manoussakis Winery:

Situated 24 km south of Chania, immerse yourself in the unique experiences offered by Manoussakis Winery. Indulge in the rich heritage of winemaking, tantalizing the senses with exceptional wines and captivating stories.

Explore the Charming Zourva Village:

Zourva, nestled on the foothills of the White Mountains at an altitude of 570m, is a charming mountain settlement located 24 km south of Chania. The village, guarded by its inhabitants dedicated to preserving traditions, exudes the pure characteristics of Cretan hospitality and culture. A cypress forest, the Tromarisas gorge, and breathtaking views of the north and the sea, combined with the area’s microclimate, create an atmosphere of euphoria for visitors. Nature paths, caves, underground springs, and remnants of ancient times make Zourva a captivating destination.

Discover the Picturesque Theriso Settlement:

Situated at the foot of the Lefka Mountains, the picturesque Theriso settlement, 16 kilometres from Chania, boasts lush greenery and a rich historical tapestry. Accessible through the 6-kilometer-long Theriso Gorge, the narrow but asphalted road takes you on a journey through history. Renowned for its beauty and significant history, Theriso was the starting point of the 1905 Revolution led by Eleftherios Venizelos, whose mother hailed from the village. Explore the headquarters used during the revolution, now a museum dedicated to the Cretan Revolution.

The central street is lined with numerous taverns and coffeehouses where you can relax under the shade of large trees. For adventure seekers, a safe climbing spot with four sections in the Theriso Gorge and the opportunity to ascend Pachnes, the highest peak of the Lefka Mountains, adds an exciting dimension to your visit. Explore the Kato Sarakina or Elliniko cavern, located 2 kilometres north of the settlement, where artefacts from the Neolithic, Minoan, and Geometric eras unveil a fascinating glimpse into the region’s ancient past.
