Description

Idaia Winery is a family business established by a couple of oenologists, Vasilis Laderos and Kalliopi Volitakis with a passion and love for wines and the land of Crete. The winery is located in the heart of a Cretan vineyard of Heraklion prefecture, in the province of Malevizi, part of the PDO Daphnes viticultural zone, 25km south of Heraklion city.
The owners’ vision and philosophy behind their wines, is to bring out the personality of Cretan varieties which, in turn, impart an identity to each of the wines they produce in the PGI Crete and Daphnes PDO regions.
Idaia Winery owes its name to the original ancient name of Crete. Zeus, a mythological king of Crete, to honor his wife, named Crete “Idaia” while the company’s trademark is the octagonal daisy of the Phaistos disk. It is said to symbolize the star Sirius, an emblem that often appears on ancient Greek finds.
Idaia Winery owns approximately three hectares and has a production capacity of 80,000 bottles per year. In addition to the local varieties Vidiano, Vilana, Thrapsahtari, Kotsifali, Liatiko and Mandilaria, international varieties such as Syrah or Grenache Rouge are cultivated, while 35% of our production is exported to the United States, Germany, France, the UK and Poland.
