The history of Biogreco began in 2001 when three young people chose to live with their families in Laconia, between Sparta and Gythio, Peloponnese. Stavros Argyropoulos and Babis Lyras, animal scientists, and Meletis Giannakos, a farmer, made a bet that they could supply food stores with chicken as it used to be: authentic and flavorful, but also certified, safe and healthy. Bringing together scientific knowledge and agricultural experience, they managed to introduce fresh, certified organic chicken to the Greek market for the first time.
Today, Biogreco consists of four family poultry farms which collaborate to produce about 200 000 organic chickens per year, amounting to roughly 70% of Greece’s organic chicken production.
Biogreco has sophisticated slaughter and packaging facilities, a private distribution network and an automated factory for producing organic animal-feed.
