If you’re seeking a festive event that embodies the essence of Amorgos, look no further than the Roasted Raki celebration. Held annually on July 26th at the charming harbor of Katapola, this event is organized by the Association of the Katapolians of Amorgos in collaboration with the Municipality of Amorgos and the Association of Professionals of Amorgos. It is a renowned occasion on the island, paying tribute to the beloved local drink, roasted raki, in grand fashion.
During the celebration, visitors have the chance to observe and learn about the traditional methods of making and roasting raki from knowledgeable locals. Alongside the customary roasted raki, they are treated to a taste of simple raki, prepared according to an age-old recipe, as well as the authentic Amorgian Pasteli in the shape of a rhombus, featuring sesame seeds, honey, and a lemon leaf. Naturally, other delightful local delicacies are also showcased as part of the festivities.
The festivities commence with a gathering of believers and tourists around 6:30 PM at the church to attend the vespers of Agios Panteleimon. Following the vespers, around 9 o’clock, the grand celebration commences. Dancers adorned in traditional attire arrive by boats from Xylokeratidi, accompanied by fireworks and lively island music, setting the tone for the festivities that continue throughout the night until the following morning.
