The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in an effort to promote the role of museums in moderns societies, established the International Museum Day on the 18th May 1977. The message of this anniversary is for the museums to become transmitters of cultural exchanges, aiming at strengthening education, foresting mutual understanding while promoting peace and cooperation among people.
Every year, together with the general message of the celebration, a special theme that is connected to museums and their role in our societies, is addressed through lectures, exhibitions, and symposiums in every ICOM member country.
