Description
The story of the Karamitros family is inseparably linked to Mesenikolas, a legacy rooted in time and tradition. One thing has remained constant through every generation—their deep connection to vine growing and winemaking.
Historical records reveal that during the Ottoman era, the Karamitros family left Evrytania, seeking a better future in the fertile lands of Mesenikolas. Their passion for viticulture soon flourished, laying the foundation for a rich winemaking heritage.
In 1959, Lake Plastiras was created, just steps away from the Mesenikolas vineyards. This man-made marvel enhanced the extraordinary terroir, creating an even more favourable microclimate for growing premium grapes and crafting exceptional wines.
With vineyards set at 700 meters altitude, nestled on the slopes of the Agrafa mountains, and blessed with rich clay-loam soil, nature had already provided the perfect setting. Now, with the lake’s influence, the conditions became nothing short of ideal—elevating Mesenikolas wines to a league of their own!
Perched at 700 meters above sea level in the picturesque village of Mesenikolas, our winery is a true hidden treasure, just 2.4 km from the breathtaking Lake Plastiras. Here, nature and tradition come together in perfect harmony, crafting wines of exceptional quality that tell the story of this land.
This region is home to Greece’s smallest PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) zone, which includes Mesenikolas, Moschato, and Dafnospilia. With a winemaking heritage dating back centuries, the locals have mastered the art of producing outstanding wines and tsipouro, which was once used as currency and traded for wheat and other goods from the plains.
Our vineyards stretch across 110 hectares of privately owned land, complemented by 250 hectares of partner vineyards. The altitude, rich soil, and unique microclimate create the perfect environment for premium winemaking. Our vines of Greek and International varieties are dry-farmed and hand-harvested, ensuring that only the finest fruit makes it into every bottle. Discover Our Unique Grape Varieties
Greek Varieties: Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Moschato, Limniona, Roditis, and the rare and exclusive Mavro Mesenikola—a red grape found nowhere else.
International Varieties: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.
Mavro Mesenikola: The Jewel of Our Winery
Mavro Mesenikola is our pride. It is a rare and exclusive grape that flourishes in the distinctive conditions of our vineyards. With its tall, elegant vines and minimal lateral branches, it adapts perfectly to the region’s poor soils. Sensitive to the elements, this remarkable variety produces wines with soft, velvety tannins and a complex, fruit-forward character.
Harvested late in the season, from late September to early October, Mavro Mesenikola delivers wines with remarkable depth, richness, and an unforgettable flavour profile.
