Description
Douloufakis Winery is located in Dafnes of Heraklion on the island of Crete producing and bottling quality wines made not only from indigenous grape varieties but from international ones as well. The wines with the most local character are the ones from liatiko and vidiano, local Cretan grape varieties, from which the winemaker produces a variety of wines, including barrel-fermented and amphora-fermented wines, like in bygone years.
Our grandfather Dimitris Douloufakis started producing wines professionally in a traditional way in 1930. Today, the family’s traditions of vineyard cultivation and wine production are continued by Dimitris’ grandson, Nikolas Douloufakis. Nikolas, having studied oenology in Italy, successfully strives to highlight the quality of Cretan – Greek wines all over the world. With Nikos’ two sons studying oenology, the family’s winemaking tradition can be expected to blossom.
TOUR AND TASTING
The winery is open to visitors year-round with guided tours of the winery’s facilities and the wine cellar with explanations of the wine production methods.
In the tasting room, visitors can taste our wines, learn their characteristics, and discuss topics concerning the grapes, the grape varieties, the wines, and the Cretan vineyards.
Booking Options
A tasting of a unique flight of six estate-crafted wines at our cellar. The wine selection ranges from Cretan indigenous grapes, like Vidiano and Liatiko, to a variety of luscious international reds and whites. It is accompanied by Cretan rusks.
DURATION: 1h 20mins
A tasting of 3 olive oils from different areas of Crete and visitors will be surprised by the differences in their flavors, such as fruity, bitter and spicy. Our certified specialists will be there to answer any question and will provide lots of advice on food combinations.
DURATION: 30mins
The wine flight could be paired with a platter of traditional Cretan cheeses and cold cuts, plenty for 2 people.
