Sykomaida or Sykomagida

Figs were the favorite fruit of the ancient Greeks. The vegetation of Corfu is rich in figs and is therefore one of the favorite raw materials for making sweets. The typical product of Corfu is called sykomaida (fig pie). The word is composite made from the words “syko” meaning fig and the ‘maza’ = mass, i.e. the result of kneading the dried figs with must, flavored with anise, fennel seed and pepper, wrapped in vine leaves.

It is served either as a dessert or as dry fruit, but it can also accompany ouzo or tsipouro.
