Description
Discover the Wine Heritage & Terroir of Lemnos
Located in Myrina, Lemnos, at the Port of Agios Nikolaos, Limnos Wines is the privately owned winery of the Agricultural Cooperative of Lemnos. Set on a 10-acre estate, the winery covers an impressive 3,500 m² and offers visitors a fascinating journey through the evolution of winemaking in Greece from the mid-20th century to the present day.
The winery reflects the island’s long-standing connection with viticulture and showcases how traditional winemaking heritage has evolved through modern technology while remaining closely connected to the unique terroir of Lemnos.
A Winery Shaped by Tradition & Modern Winemaking
When the winery was originally built, winemaking was carried out using reinforced concrete fermentation and storage tanks. These tanks were used until the late 1980s, when they were gradually replaced by modern stainless-steel tanks.
Today, the original concrete tanks are no longer used for wine production but remain an important structural part of the historic winery building, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the development of Greek winemaking over the decades.
The modern stainless-steel tanks have a total capacity of 35,000 hectolitres, combining the winery’s historic character with contemporary production technology.
The Vineyards of Lemnos
The vineyards cultivated by the producer-members of the Agricultural Cooperative extend across more than 3,600 acres throughout the island of Lemnos.
The relatively low yield of approximately 700 kg per unit of production contributes to the quality of the grapes used in winemaking, helping preserve the distinctive character and authenticity of the island’s wines.
These vineyards are an essential part of the identity of Limnos Wines, reflecting the island’s unique landscape, climate, soil, and long tradition of viticulture.
