On July 27th

Ikaria is famous for its festivals, which blend faith, hospitality, music, and dance. Among them, one of the most important is the feast of Saint Panteleimon, celebrated on July 27th, attracting both locals and visitors from all over the island.

In Ikaria, several churches are dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, and each hosts its own festival on July 27th. The most notable ones include:

  • Saint Panteleimon in Mounde (near Agios Kirykos) – one of the largest and most famous festivals on the island, drawing large crowds and lasting until the early morning hours.
  • Saint Panteleimon in Raches – a traditional festival with a strong local character, violin, lute, and continuous Ikarian dancing.
  • Saint Panteleimon in Perdiki (northern Ikaria) – a gathering point for residents of the surrounding villages, with food, wine, and live music.
  • Saint Panteleimon in Vrakaes – a smaller, more family-like celebration, but one that keeps the Ikarian festive spirit alive.

The Religious Celebration

Saint Panteleimon, known as the healing saint and protector of the sick, holds a special place in the hearts of the Ikarian people. On his feast day, a festive Divine Liturgy is held in the small church dedicated to him, where the faithful gather to pray for his blessing and healing grace.

The Festival

After the liturgy, the village square around the church fills with long tables and local delicacies. The highlight is the boiled goat with pilaf, accompanied by meze, cheeses, and plenty of local wine. Everything is organised collectively by the villagers, and often the proceeds go toward community projects such as schools or the upkeep of the church.

Soon after, the music begins—with violin and lute—and both locals and visitors join the dance. The Ikarian dance, slow at first and gradually more energetic, creates a vast circle where everyone participates. It is not just a dance, but a symbol of unity, continuity, and joy of life.
