The “TENTOURA CASTRO – G.P HAHALIS” distillery is one of the best known and most traditional Greek companies. It traces its roots to the “fragrant” island of Chios in the 19th century, renowned throughout the world for its exclusive production of mastic. The business relocated to the foothills of Patras Castle in the city of Patras, in 1939. Production has relocated since 1993 to a modern processing plant in the Romanos region near Patras, which is renowned for its excellent water quality and boasts suitable environmental conditions for properly ageing and storing extracts and distillates in oak barrels. The preservation of the traditional methods of preparing drinks (extraction – distillation) in conjunction with modern bottling and standardisation methods have assisted the company’s development.
Tour and Tasting
A guided tour inside the traditional distillery store, among oak barrels, flavours and aromas of distillates and extracts. A tour about the company’s history, the Tentoura liqueur history (the traditional liqueur of Patras) and information about the production of alcoholic beverages. Visitors will taste alcoholic beverages from 100% natural extracts & distillates and especially the beverages that emerged as research products during scientific studies of the distillery in cooperation with the Democritus University of Thrace and the University of Patras during two different EU programmes financed by the distillery, the EU and the Hellenic Republic (NSRF 2007-2013, NSRF 2014-2020). The “Science & Spirits” tasting started during the distillery’s participation in the “Europe in my Region 2017” project of the European Union (NSRF 2007-2013) and continues nowadays. Also, visitors can taste the Tentoura Loukoumi (Greek sweet delight dusted with icing sugar) and the Tentoura Xeroloukoumo (another type of loukoumi, with granulated sugar).
