Description
Twenty years ago, the Papageorgiou family discovered — and fell in love with — the land of Tinos. In a place graced with centuries-old olive trees and fragrant orange groves, nestled near the historic Ursuline School, they founded Messarea Winery: a contemporary, bioclimatic winery designed to blend seamlessly into the island’s natural landscape.
With deep respect for the environment and local tradition, the family planted new vineyards on the island’s signature xerolithia (dry-stone terraces), cultivating native grape varieties such as Potamisi, Rozaki, Assyrtiko, Mavrotragano, and Koumaryano — each expressing the authentic terroir of Tinos.
The winery’s emblem, depicting Philyra and Chiron, symbolizes wisdom, harmony, and a profound connection with nature.
At Messarea Winery, winemaking tradition meets modern craftsmanship. Each bottle captures the soul of Tinos — pure, elegant, and true to its origin.
Tour and Tasting
Discover the spirit of Tinos through an immersive journey at Messarea Winery — where history, landscape, and craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony.
Your experience begins with a guided walk through our first organic vineyard in Messarea, a 5-acre estate planted in 2021 on sandy, schistose soils. This is the land that first inspired our family to revive the island’s ancient viticultural heritage — hidden vineyard plots rediscovered within the estate’s age-old terraces and olive groves.
As you stroll among the vines, you’ll learn about the native Tinian varieties we cultivate — Potamisi White, Assyrtiko, Koumaryano, and Mavrotragano — and the sustainable methods that bring out the true character of the island’s terroir.
The journey continues at our bioclimatic winery, harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape of the historic Ursuline estate. Here, tradition meets innovation as you explore our modern winemaking philosophy and facilities.
Your visit concludes with a guided tasting of three Messarea wines, each expressing the wisdom, balance, and connection with nature embodied in our emblem — Philyra and Chiron.
