Tsirihta

Tsirihta: Pontian crispy balls, akin to loukoumades but with sugar/honey. A treasured delicacy for Pontian children and weddings.

Tsirihta, or Pontian crispy balls, share similarities with the renowned loukoumades, yet possess their own unique allure: while traditional loukoumades luxuriate in syrupy baths and cinnamon dustings, Pontian crispy balls are gently adorned with a sprinkling of sugar or honey.

Treasured as a cherished delicacy, Pontians bestowed tsirihta upon their children as a delectable treat. These delightful morsels also graced the tables of Pontian weddings, oftentimes taking precedence over bread in the celebratory feasts.

The name “tsirihta” derives from the lively sizzle (“tsirigma”) emitted during their frying process.
