A Greek politician and author of several books on political and historical topics, he was also the founder of the Evangelos Averof-Tositsas Foundation, to which he donated his significant personal collection of paintings by Greek artists of the 19th and early 20th century, and built a gallery to house it. At the same time, he invested in local vineyards and started the cultivation of the abandoned lands of Metsovo, and created a contemporary winery.

Katogi Averoff finds inspiration in life and people; in vines which flourish under difficult conditions; in bears and birds, our companions in the Metsovo vineyards; in people, who overcome adversity to create. We are inspired by everything that delights the senses and frees the mind and soul –all things that transform the making of wine into a way of life.
The winery is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for wine production and bottling, and as for the wine cellar, it contains more than 1,200 oak barrels maturing our red wines.
The Katogi Averoff hotel & winery is located in the mountain village of Metsovo in the Epirus region of Northern Greece. It is a pioneer of Greek wine tourism situated in a magical natural landscape. The hotel’s fifteen luxuriously appointed rooms enjoy views of the winery and of Metsovo’s magnificent scenery. The architecture and interior design exude discreet luxury and a contemporary aesthetic which nonetheless captures many traditional local features.
Visitors can enjoy atmospheric audio-visual-enhanced tours of the wine cellars, learning about the history of the winery and the wine-making process. Of course, there is ample opportunity for wine tasting. Other attractions include walks around the vineyards, forest, or surrounding hills; the sights, sounds, and traditions of Metsovo, or excursions farther afield. A stay at the hotel is a unique experience: Relax in the spacious rooms or retreat to the open fire or in the charming courtyard with its trees and herb gardens. Visitors have also the opportunity to admire an extensive range of exciting pieces of art on site.
