Kozani Compulsory Partnership of Crocus producers was established in 1971 and consists of about 1,000 members, from the Western Departments of the Prefecture of Kozani in Western Macedonia. The headquarters of the Cooperative is located in the village of Krokos (Crocus).
Saffron (crocus) has been grown in the area of Kozani since the 17th century. Over the years, significant experience has been gained in its production. Until 1966, the product was traded and marketed through wholesalers who were buying saffron from individual producers, generally at low prices. The lack of bargaining power and the failure to research the international market led the producers in 1966 to found the Free Partnership of Crocus Producers, which was renamed in 1971 to Cooperative de Safran.
The Partnership is certified with ISO 9001: 2008 and has the exclusive right to collect, control, pack and handle the entire annual production of the exceptional quality saffron “KROKOS KOZANIS PDO” (Protected Designation of Origin) at its modern facilities. The Partnership has also been producing accredited organic saffron since 1997.
