Velani is a family-run business, not far from Kasteli airport, belonging to Sabine and Manolis, who together with their daughters Maria and Helena strive to provide guests a warm family atmosphere. It is situated at an altitude of 365 meters, overlooking the Lagada valley and the artificial lake of the Aposelemi River, with a panoramic view of the north side of the Mt. Dikti range and is surrounded by perennial oak trees. A retreat just 35 minutes from Heraklion and positioned at the center of Crete, it makes for easy exploration of much of the island.
Country Hotel Velani organizes Greek home-cooking lessons for small groups, giving the opportunity to the participants to enjoy the local, fresh products by creating some wonderful dishes in our outdoor kitchen.
We start with a walk in our garden to collect the vegetables, herbs, or fruits required to prepare the day’s dish. After receiving instruction from our chef, Manolis, and watching him cook, you can try, hands-on, to prepare your own dishes. Manolis is there to help and answer questions. We finish the lesson with the most fun part of the experience: eating what we have prepared. Among the dishes that can be prepared during the cooking lessons are mousaka, gemista, soutzoukakia (meatballs in red sauce), and tzatziki.
