The Geraki family is one of the oldest livestock-farming families in the Aegean Island of Skopelos.
The official deed of ownership of our land, then known as Agnontas, dates from 1900, and is now located within the Municipality of Skopelos. The roughly 20 Ha of grazing land has been in use for more than 100 years, while the goat farm is located on the neighboring plot.
Grazing on the islands of Skopelos, Alonissos, Skiathos, the Skopelos goat species can also be found on the deserted islands of Kyra Panagia, Peristera or Xyro, Ghiura, Skatzoura and on small barren islands such as Piperi and Psathoura. No written references to the origins of this species exist. It likely arose from the breeding with the wild goat found on the island of Ghiura, near Alonissos. What we know from locals suggests that the species was a product of the island’s environment and climate in combination with controlled breeding over the years by progressive breeders who identified which animals would improve their flocks.
With the Skopelos goat species recognized across Greece and beyond, we decided in 2003 to make the area more accessible because of popular interest, as well as the interest of breeders in the animals’ superior yields of milk and meat.
TOUR AND TASTING
The Agroktima Aiga welcomes visitors, who want to learn about this native goat species and its important livestock characteristics.
Visitors can take part in feeding the animals and in milking them by hand.
