Stemnitsa, Festival at the Cloister of Zoodohos Pigi

June 5

Every first Sunday of June a big celebration with traditional dances and songs is held in honor of Stemnitsa village, Central Peloponnese, which was the capital of Greece for a few days. Lots of sweets are offered, and a doxology takes place at the cloister of Zoodohos Pigi. A cobble-stone path dating from the 15th century leads to the cloister of Zoodohos Pigi. This is where the first session of the Peloponnesian Senate took place in 1821. Though the local cuisine offers no great variety of choices, the local meats, the dairy products, the hand-made pasta such as hilopites, lasagna and trahana attract great interest. Some of the classic dishes are pork with nuts and skordalia, lamb with celery and aromatic herbs, pita with trahana, alaniaris kokoras with the local hilopites, river trout, lamb chops and many other local meats, oven-cooked or boiled. The hand-made pasta, trahana, hilopites, lasagna, kritharaki, the dairy products, spoon sweets and honey from local fir trees complete the menu.
