Sifnos, Festival of the Panagia of Chrisopigi

May 27

Port of Sifnos with the church of the Panagia of Chrisopigi that commemorate festival of her birth

The festival of the Panagia of Chrisopigi in Sifnos is the island’s largest and most important festival and is renowned throughout the Cycladic islands. On the day of Ascension every year, the locals and foreign visitors don their best clothing and gather at the sacred cliff of Chrisopigi to honor the Mother of Jesus.

The traditional custom of the Panigiras continues to this day. The panigiras (i.e, the organizer of the festival) shoulders all the expenses of the festival and takes care of the church for a year. While he customarily keeps the holy icon at his home to honor it, an exception is made in the case of the Chrisopigi icon, which is hosted at the parish church. On the day of the festival, the icon, accompanied by priests, is brought to the Panagia Chrissopigi church by boat. The vespers start at 6.30 pm. Following the liturgy, a traditional dinner, featuring the delicious local dishes, is served. The dishes are the traditional revithada, olives and veal in tomato sauce and pasta, while wine is served from local terracotta jugs.
